Sucessful Smart Irrigation Month seminar

On July 16, 2015, ThinkWater and Squeeze Every Drop hosted an irrigation seminar at OSU-OKC

As declared by Gov. Mary Fallin in 2013, July is Smart Irrigation Month in Oklahoma and on July 16, conservation authorities held a Smart Irrigation Month irrigation seminar at Oklahoma State University, Oklahoma City campus.

The seminar, hosted by ThinkWater and Squeeze Every Drop, featured Robert Reaves from the Oklahoma Irrigation Association. He spoke to the 51 attendees about home-landscape irrigation.

“I wanted to give them as much information as I could on different problems they are likely to face, or are facing already, with irrigating their lawns,” Reaves said.

Justin Moss, principle investigator for the Oklahoma City water conservation effort and Huffine Endowed professor of turfgrass science, said outreach opportunities like the seminar are essential in water conservation efforts and education.

“We want to make sure we are giving people as much information as we can,” Moss said. “The information from the seminar can be taken back and applied directly to people’s home landscapes.”

Reaves said after he discussed topics like irrigation uniformity, spray pressure, and high-performance nozzles, he received questions on the pros and cons of different irrigation setups and inquiries as to what the best irrigation system for specific landscapes might be.

“Irrigation needs are situational,” Reaves said. “I had a lot of very well-educated people here today but it is still hard to say if one system is the best over another. It depends on landscape needs and the homeowners’ willingness to maintain the system.”

While irrigation education is a large part of Smart Irrigation Month, according to the Irrigation Association, the primary goal of the campaign—established in 2005—is to increase awareness of the value of water use and grow demand for water-saving products, practices and services.
